Hours ago, Americans learned that all charges against Empire actor Jussie Smollett have been dropped. This development comes after Smollett previously faced a series of felony counts for staging a hate crime which he claimed to be a victim of, reports The Daily Caller News Foundation.
Everything You Need to Know about the Dropped Charges
Earlier this year, Smollett claimed to be a victim of a brutal hate crime on the streets of Chicago. The Empire actor alleged that two men in ski masks beat him up, poured bleached on him and screamed, “this is MAGA country.” Smollett’s account of this supposed incident made national news very quickly and many people rallied to Smollett’s defense.
As everyone knows, the story didn’t end there. As police began investigating the account, inconsistencies began to show. For starters, law enforcement found zero footage of the alleged attack after combing through hours of recordings. Secondly, the two men who Smollett claimed attacked him turned out to be extras on Empire; both brothers stated that Smollett hired them to assault him for the sake of boosting his career.
News that Smollett likely faked the alleged hate crime quickly dominated the headlines. Smollett rapidly went from victim to suspect. Following an indictment, the actor faced a series of felony charges, however, all that changed today.
Prosecutors working on this case issued the following public statement earlier today:
“After reviewing all of the facts and circumstances of the case, including Mr. Smollett’s volunteer service in the community and agreement to forfeit his bond to the City of Chicago, we believe this outcome is a just disposition and appropriate resolution to this case.”
The drop of the case has “suspicious” written all over it. Smollett’s case has also been sealed, so the public may never truly know what prompted the wiping of his record.
